Someone paid $410,000 for the plate bearing the number 20 when it went up for auction Sunday at the Rehoboth Beach Convention Center.

John Wakefield, of Delaware Tag Traders, tells the Delaware News Journal the price exceeded expectations. He says it surpassed $325,000 spent on a number 14 license plate three years ago.

Wakefield says a number like 20 “generates quite a stir and a buzz.”

Wakefield likens the license plate auction to baseball cards. He says “it’s a Delaware thing.”

Hell fucking yeah, that’s right. Someone spent over $400,000 on that license plate and what a great purchase it is. Delaware, and I believe Rhode Island too, number their license plates and the lower the number, especially under triple digits, the more people want to own them. I know it’s kinda stupid, but if I could afford a single-digit license plate, I would definitely do it. It’s a status symbol. It shows you are royalty. It’s like people who buy paintings for $50 million. Nobody thinks a painting is actually worth that much, but since it is worth that much, you gotta have it.

When you’re driving around town with that number 20 plate, people respect you. People take pictures of it. People are jealous they have 54,502 and you have number 20. In a world where status is everything, having a low license plate number is everything. I’m pretty sure if you own # 1 you are the king of Delaware, which basically means you don’t wait in line at The Starboard.
